Boxing and Alex Band together? Definitely not something I would think could work, but it sure did! This TV event was something my record label over here in Europe, EMI, had been trying to lock down for some time, so it was really exciting once they finally did for everyone cause it's such a big event that can really help my career in Germany. And it wasn't just about performing my single "Tonight" again, I was also scheduled to sing the American National Anthem as well! I've been wanting to do that for a very long time, and what better place to than Germany! hahaha. A little odd I know, but still cool! I flew in to Germany the day before the event and slept as best I could considering my mind was racing and my body was stiff and destroyed from that long crappy plane flight. No matter how many times I've flown to the other side of the world, it really never gets easier. There's nothing worse than being trapped in a thin-air'd-hot cornucopia-of-sickness-tube, 30,000 feet in the air for 16 hours! Yuck. Anyway, sound check was first thing the next day. Within a minute of walking in to the giant arena, with the boxing ring in the center, a massive stage to my left, and a completely crazy light show, I knew this was gonna be bad ass. Everyone working there treated us with respect and the rehearsal went very smoothly. They even had us run the song once with the crazy pyro explosions happening at the same time, as a test. These things were HOT and blowing up into the air right in front of my face...but I didn't care cause I knew it was gonna look awesome. They had me run through letting the German boxer walk by me coming from behind in the middle of the song and they also had me sing the US national anthem a few times as well to get their camera positioning right. When we were done, one of the main guys working there said to me "don't worry, that was just the small rehearsal pyro explosions...the ones during the show are going to be very very much bigger!". Hahahaha, omg you've got to be joking me!? Needless to say I was a little concerned about just how insanely hot and big these things really were going to be for the actual live TV performance. I don't want my hair catching on fire! That would suck. I like my hair. And my skin....don't need my skin melting off either.
We had quite a bit of time to kill in between the rehearsal and the actual late night taping, but they managed to fill that up with interviews and hair and makeup and dinner, etc etc. By 10:30 PM my jet lag was definitely kicking in big time and I was trying not to fall asleep. The crew finally came in and said they needed me and my fake band of German dudes to get on stage behind the big screen that would open up to "reveal" us. Yes, it was finally time for this thang to go down! I was all warmed up and ready to go. The whole thing happened so fast I can't even really remember much to tell you about here, so I recommend you all watch the youtube videos of it you can find here on my site in the videos section. What I can say is that it was hot, loud, scary, exciting, moving, touching and brilliant. Definitely one of the most fun performances I've done in a long time, and one of the most exhilarating. That pyro sure was a lot bigger than rehearsal! I mean holy shit! I had ash all over me once I finished performing "Tonight" and was trying my best to brush it all off before the cameras came back to me for my National Anthem performance. That was really cool to sing and I think I did a pretty damn good job of it. Even though I was singing it in Germany, it still felt important and the crowd was very respectful of it and of myself which was something I was sort of scared of. Once I was all done and ran off that stage, I was dripping with sweat and exhausted and totally ready for bed. I skipped the crazy after party and went right to my hotel to go to sleep...had more work lined up in Germany the next three days. Definitely nothing luxurious or easy about this job, but I love it more than anything and am SO SO SO SO SO happy to finally be back in action. Thanks to the German fans who came and supported me...I will be seeing all of you next month on my sold out German tour! And I get to play shows in Austria and Switzerland too! It's going to be so awesome! All the love...
